FSC certified Ekki supplied to new RNLI lifeboat station in south Wales
Wijma UK were awarded the supply of FSC certified Ekki to the main contractor Bam Nuttall who has constructed the new station under a framework agreement with the RNLI, which has seen Nuttall’s work on similar schemes around the country.
The new lifeboat station at Mumbles was made more challenging by the need to install the new station on part of a listed pier first built in 1898. The cast iron 255 meter long Victorian pier although structurally sound was not deemed suitable to place a modern lifeboat station on, instead being built on a frame which acts independently from the listed structure.
Wijma supplied FSC certified Ekki for the project with over 600m2 decking, as well as replacement joists and pre-machined kerbs for the lifeboat station and fishing platform on the pier. The timber was sourced from logs harvested in the concessions that Wijma manages, over 315,000 hectares of FSC certified forests in Cameroon, in line with our view of Responsible Forest Management as a combination of the social, ecological, and economic rights and needs of the present generation without compromising those of future generations, with a sustainable forest and yield of timber at its core.
